Earth Day - What we choose to keep

A moment to pause

There is something we’ve been thinking about lately.

In a world that moves quickly, where newness is constant and things are often made to be replaced, what do we actually choose to keep?

Earth Day feels like a gentle moment to pause and reflect on that. Not in a loud or overwhelming way, but in a quieter, more considered one.

A moment to step back and think about the things we surround ourselves with. What they are made from. How they were created. And how they make us feel when we wear them.

The way clothing has changed

Clothing has quietly become something temporary. Made fast, worn briefly, and then let go of just as quickly.

To keep up with constant demand, materials are often chosen for speed and cost. Synthetic fabrics and heavily processed, unnatural dyes make it possible to produce large quantities quickly, but they come with a cost that goes far beyond what we see.

They impact the environment through waste and pollution, but they also affect how clothing feels on our bodies. What we wear sits against our skin every single day. It becomes part of our lived experience.

There is a noticeable difference between something that is breathable, natural, and gentle, and something that is not. One feels in harmony with the body. The other can feel restrictive, disconnected, sometimes even irritating.

And somewhere within this fast cycle, we’ve lost something important. The connection to how things are made, who makes them, and the value of the piece itself.

A slower way of making

Slow fashion offers a different rhythm.

One that cannot be rushed. One that values time, skill, and intention.

Pieces are made carefully, often by hand, with attention in every step. There is a human presence in the process, something you can feel without needing to see it.

At Naked Generation, this is the way we choose to create.

We work closely with incredible family-run businesses in India, where our garments are brought to life using traditional techniques that have been practised and passed down over many years. These are not processes that can be replicated quickly. They rely on knowledge, patience, and a deep connection to craft.

Our fabrics are made from natural fibres, chosen for how they feel as much as how they look. Soft, breathable, and designed to move with the body.

Our prints are created using natural dyes and hand block printing, where each pattern is carefully pressed onto the fabric one at a time. No two pieces are ever exactly the same.

There are slight variations, small shifts, moments where the human touch is visible.

These are not imperfections.

They are what make each piece unique. A quiet reminder of the hands that made it.

The people behind the pieces

Behind every garment is a story.

Not just of design, but of people.

Hands mixing dyes. Hands carving blocks. Hands pressing patterns into fabric, often under the warmth of the sun, following techniques that have existed for generations.

Working with these family businesses means more than just producing clothing. It means supporting livelihoods, preserving traditional craft, and being part of something that has depth and history.

There is a relationship there. A shared respect for the process. A belief that how something is made matters just as much as how it looks.

Choosing differently

When we begin to slow down, the way we buy naturally shifts.

Instead of choosing more, we begin to choose better.

Pieces that feel right. Pieces we return to again and again. Pieces that soften over time and become part of our everyday lives.

They hold memory. Of where we wore them. Of how we felt. Of moments that stay with us.

And sometimes, they go even further than that.

There is something incredibly special about owning a piece that doesn’t end with you. A dress that can be passed on. That carries its story into another life, another moment, another generation.

Clothing becomes more than something we wear.

It becomes something we keep.

A gentle invitation

This Earth Day, we’re not asking you to change everything.

Just to pause. To notice. To choose with a little more intention.

To consider where something comes from. How it was made. How it feels, both on your body and in your life.

To invest in pieces that are created with care, using natural materials and time-honoured techniques.

Pieces that last. Pieces that are worn, loved, and remembered.

Printed by nature. Carried by you. 🌿
