Meet Alice: Creator of Summer Moon Studio

Alice of Summer Moon Studio popped into our shop on the day of our summer party, completely on the off chance that we might be interested in stocking her work. Needless to say, we fell a little bit in love.

I asked if she’d be happy to leave a few pieces with us for the party that evening, and they were such a lovely success that her work has stayed with us ever since. We now stock a selection of Alice’s cards and art prints in store.

Each design begins as a meticulous hand painting, inspired by Alice’s fascination with the cycles and energies of the natural world: the changing seasons, flora and fauna, and the deep connection we have to the landscapes and rhythms around us.

We sat down with Alice to hear a little more about her work, the importance of believing in yourself, and the life and landscape of Cornwall that inspires so much of what she creates.

Can you tell us a little about Summer Moon Studio and how it all began?

Summer Moon Studio began after 12 years working as an in-house print designer for high street brands, I wanted to take a leap to honour my own creative practice and to create for my soul - in the hope it will bring joy to others. This led me to taking a deep dive into my own art practice to re-discover my style, and this is where Summer Moon Studio was born!

Nature seems to run through so much of your work - what is it about the seasons, plants and the natural world that inspires you most?

In a world that is so fast paced and constantly striving for more, I find a huge amount of comfort in connecting and rooting myself in nature, and aligning myself with its ebbs and flows and rhythms. My fascination with nature's cycles, energies, seasons, flora and fauna as well as our connection to this energy and how deep this runs within us informs all aspects of what I do. Exploring these themes is what underpins my personal work as well as the people and brands I collaborate with.

What does your creative process look like, from the first spark of an idea to a finished painting?

My creative process often starts with immersing myself in nature and capturing a moment, a feeling and visual with photography or a scribble of notes or a sketch. This will then lead to lots of scribbly and very wobbly sketches exploring layout and forms until I'm happy with a composition. I love to do this on loose sheets of paper as sometimes I find sketchbooks too intimidating to work in, which sounds crazy I know ! Then I get the paints out and play with different colour combinations. This involves lots of paint mixing and experimentation which is always fun!

Starting something of your own takes a lot of courage - what have you learnt about trusting yourself and believing in what you create?

Starting something of my own has been a huge learning curve and challenged me in lots of different ways. I have learnt that the most important thing you can do is be 100% yourself, authentic to who you are, trust in your vision and don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Everyone's journey looks different and that is what makes small independent businesses so incredible!  Something else I have learnt is that your creations won't be for everyone and that's totally ok! The souls that are meant to find you absolutely will if you believe in what you are creating.

How does living and creating here in Cornwall influence your work and the way you live?

Living and creating in this gorgeous part of the world influences me so much! What influences me most is the deep connection we have to the land, sea and nature's cycles when you live on the coast. How attuned you are to the tides and the moon cycle, the sunrise and sunset times shifting through the year, the wild flowers that bloom in the hedgerows marking the arrival of a season. Also Cornwall is full of incredibly talented creatives and independent business and everyone is supportive of one another. I am constantly inspired by the talent in the South West and ultimately being surrounded by this community gave me the courage to take the leap and forge this path for myself.

What advice would you give to anyone dreaming of starting something creative of their own, but feeling nervous about taking that first step?

My best advice would be to just take the pressure off yourself wanting it to be perfect the first time, and let yourself have the time to play and experiment. It's such an incredible part of the creative journey to just start exploring ideas, get it out into the world, and learn along the way! Also start small! You don't need to do everything at the same time. You can start with just one idea you have and share that. You never know what opportunities will present themselves to you once you start sharing your creativity, and following people's creative journey is something I always find so inspiring.

And lastly, What drew you to Naked Generation?

I have always been so deeply inspired by Naked Generation for so many reasons, it's tricky to describe concisely what drew me in! With Summer Moon Studio I wanted to work with independent businesses that align with my own values, and Naked Generation does this in abundance. Everything in Naked Generation's orbit connects back to grounding ourselves in a slower intentional way of life whilst also encouraging you to express yourself fully and live loudly ! Living a life full of soul, heart and joy intentionally surrounded by incredible clothing and homewares that make you feel amazing and that you will treasure for life and not just a season. Honouring the mesmerizing craft of artisan block printing and using natural fibres and dyes which is a craft I have been passionate about for years and has brought me endless print inspiration as a designer. With my work centering around nature's abundance, sustainability and surrounding yourself with art that brings you joy I really feel our worlds have collided perfectly and I couldn't imagine a better match for Summer Moon Studio.
